The Memorial Drive Embankment Remediation helped restore a key coastal road after heavy rainfall triggered slope movement on The Hill.

Delivered by the City of Newcastle, this $5 million project strengthened a 115-metre section of embankment beside Memorial Drive and upgraded stormwater infrastructure to better manage runoff during heavy rain.

With works taking place along a constrained road corridor, careful planning around existing trees, vegetation and public infrastructure was crucial. In 2024, Tree Survey was brought in to provide specialist arboricultural services during the upgrade’s planning stages.

To start, our team conducted a Tree Survey to capture tree locations, supported by GIS Analysis for clear spatial data and accurate mapping. Next, we performed a Preliminary Tree Assessment to document tree health, structure and condition across the site.

From there, our specialists carried out an Arboricultural Impact Assessment to examine the likely effects of the remediation works on surrounding trees.

We then developed a tailored Tree Protection Plan with practical recommendations to help safeguard retained trees throughout construction.

All services were completed on schedule and within budget, enabling project teams to complete the embankment remediation efficiently.
