The HMAS Watson Redevelopment supports the renewal of a key Royal Australian Navy training base at South Head in Sydney.

This $430.5 million Australian Government Defence project aims to modernise ageing military infrastructure and improve the base’s training, accommodation and operational facilities over seven years.

Works include a new training precinct, upgraded engineering services, new live-in accommodation, a redesigned base entry precinct and expanded car parking.

Importantly, this 14.6-hectare site occupies a prominent coastal headland at the entrance to Sydney Harbour, where infrastructure sits alongside established vegetation and sensitive landscape conditions.

In 2024, Pedwards Group engaged Tree Survey to provide specialist arboricultural support during the project’s planning and construction stages.

Our team started with a Tree Survey and Preliminary Tree Assessment to record tree locations, health, structure and site conditions.

Next, we performed an Arboricultural Impact Assessment to assess potential impacts from the redevelopment works. Finally, a tailored Tree Protection Plan was prepared to help safeguard retained trees throughout construction.

All services were completed on time and within budget. Tree Survey’s clear, site-specific advice has supported the careful delivery of this significant Defence redevelopment.
