The Garden Island Defence Precinct Upgrade forms part of the Department of Defence’s long-term redevelopment of the Royal Australian Navy base in Sydney Harbour.

With nine ships homeported at the base and workforce numbers projected to grow by around 20% over the next two decades, it will help prepare the precinct for increasing operational demands by modernising key infrastructure.

In 2025, Tree Survey was engaged by lead contractor Aurecon Australasia to provide specialist arboricultural insights during the project’s planning phase.

First, our team completed a Tree Survey and GIS Analysis to establish accurate tree locations and produce clear mapping across the site.

Next, we prepared a Preliminary Tree Assessment to document existing tree health and structure. Additionally, an Arboricultural Impact Assessment was developed to assess potential impacts from the proposed works. Finally, a Tree Protection Plan detailed measures to protect retained trees during construction.

All services were completed on time and within budget. This work gave the project team precise arboricultural information to support staged works across a complex, operational Defence precinct.
