Cooks River Channel Renewal at Walsh Avenue Reserve

The upgrade focuses on transitioning sections of the channel from concrete-lined banks to more naturalised treatments, incorporating rock stabilisation and native planting. Water-sensitive urban design measures, including rain gardens and wetlands, are also being considered to improve stormwater quality before discharge into the river.

As works are located within a public reserve, they must be carefully planned within established vegetation. Trees are positioned along key sections of the channel, requiring coordinated planning around proposed bank reconstruction and construction access.

In 2023, Tree Survey was engaged to provide arboricultural insights during the early planning stage. To start, we undertook a Tree Survey and Preliminary Tree Assessment to accurately document tree locations, condition, and structure across the project area.

This informed an Arboricultural Impact Assessment that identified where construction activities, including bank reconstruction and access, may affect existing trees, supported by clear drawings and mapping.

Finally, we created a Tree Protection Plan to provide tailored guidance to manage impacts, including where removal may be required and how to minimise disturbance to retained trees.

These services were delivered on schedule and within budget, equipping project teams with the arboricultural information needed to support early-stage planning for this complex channel renewal project.
